Back masking could mean a series of things, but when it comes to music it could very well be a coincidence. Because if someone listens to a song backwards it makes no sense and sounds scratchy. So if you ask a random person they will say they hear a bunch of scratches. But if you ask a religious person they will say its the devil. However there are some musicians who actually do have hidden messages in the reversed version of the song. But in my opinion, it just seems all like a big coincidence.
Most people when asked about back masking, or reversed songs will think of "stairway to heaven" by Led Zeppelin. But there are more songs out there, such as "Reverse Will" from the video game "Silent Hill". The original song gives off an eerie sound as if something bad is about to happen, which makes it kind of scary. However, after listening to it reversed you can slightly hear the prayer "Now I lay me down to sleep" / "I pray the Lord my soul to keep" / "If I should die before I wake" / "I pray the Lord my soul to take". Now this may be intentional because the reversed song is played in "Silent Hill 2" and being the nature of the game, it would make sense that the back masking of this song would be a prayer of some kind.
People over look the songs and just go on what they hear from the normal version and what that story has to say. But then there's are songs that tell a much different or refer to the actual song once said backwards. Such as Tools "Intension" which sounds like any other Tool song, it can either be good, messed up and/or tell a story. But for this song, once listened to backwards you can hear "Listen to your mother. Your father is right. Work hard. Stay in school. Listen to your mother. Your father is right. Listen to your mother. Your father is right." This can be heard at the beginning of the song, which is strange because the song already sounds like its in reverse, or maybe it is and this is the normal version? Either way, the original version sounds creepy until the singer begins to sing, which still gives off a creepy-ish vibe. But when reversed it can sound a bit creepy and the new lyrics may be hard to hear, but they are in there.
So what does this mean? Do all songs have secret demonic meanings behind all of them? No, not all, or none of them could be for all we know. Because the new lyrics are found from what people think they are hearing versus whats actually being said. That's what people need to understand, and if it sounds like someones talking about Satan, that doesn't mean they actually are. So just enjoy the song for what it is instead of being caught up in the reversed messages, if there are any.

Tone, how you define the way a song is, somewhat like mood. Its how one would describe a song or story. But for Tools "schism" the tome could be called a reflective sorrow. The reason behind this is the synecdoche, sorrowful imagery, and an uplifting yet sad narrative.

Schism comes to play when synecdoche is heard, not that its ever rarely used. But a synecdoche is when a term is used to refer to the whole thing. And schism means to break or clash, which this song is about, breaking up in relationships. But not just the name of the song, but "I know the pieces fit" could be used for this as well. Both the lyrics and schism can be used because the songs about breaking up, yet the singer knows that if they were together once then they can get back together again. So in a sense, this song is about the hope of two getting back together once again.

The song displays a sorrowful imagery. "Mildewed and smoldering. Fundamental differing. Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion disintegrating as it goes testing our communication. The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so we cannot seem to reach an end crippling our communication." This talks about how everything around them is "crippling" their communication. And not to mention all of this is disgusting, maybe its to show the way he thinks his girlfriend thought of the relationship. And how that's what was happening to them. The song also goes onto say "Testing our communication" which might be because of how life is throwing all this at them, to see if the relationship can handle it. And unfortunately his girlfriend couldn't or just wouldn't.

And finally, an uplifting yet sad narrative, or story. "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers, between supposed brothers. I know the pieces fit" The song ends with the singer saying "I know the pieces fit" for about eight or so times. In a way its to beat into the listeners head that he knows if it worked out once it can work out again. So even though this song is sad and depressing once you really listen to it, the singer tells that there is a way to get them back. All you have to do is try and try, because if you really love someone someone then there shouldn't be anything stopping you. That's why its uplifting, if the singer can believe so, then so can anyone else. You just need to pull yourself together and get out there again and try.

And so that's the tune for Tools "Schism". Its split into three halves to really get it into the brains. This sadistic uplifting song should be listened to more often, especially if a relationship is broken up and someone wants to get back to together with the other person. And also Tool is a great band and there's always a new story to be told in their songs. So go listen to Tool and of course, this song.
Two songs that sounds almost the exact same are AC/DECs "TNT" and Lou Gramms "Arrow through your heart". AC/DC came out with the song first which would lead people to think that Lou Gramm copied them and used the beginning of the song in his. So the next time you listen to these songs, pay attention to the beginnings and you'll notice they sound the same.

Two songs that sound similar but may not be copy righted are Star Wars's "imperial march" and Mary Poppins "Spoon full of sugar". It transitions from instrument to voice with the high point of the imperial march going with the chorus of a spoon full of sugar when she says "A spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down."

Music, a great piece of art. Enjoyable to listen and even create. And along with all of making and listening to are the tones of the songs. Because the tone could be one of the most important things (But not in my opinion). Which brings up Metallica, the greatest band ever, and they’re song “Until it sleeps”. It has to do with an earnest state of mind, indignant, and gloomy.
Earnest, to be earnest is to be in an intense, sincere state of mind. Which is what “Until it sleeps” is about. “So tear me open, pour me out, there's things inside that scream and shout” which is explaining how something’s in him trying to get out. Which is intense because it’s not everyday someone says, ‘oh something’s ripping at my chest trying to get out’. Not unless you’re John Hurt from Alien. And when the chorus is sung, it really becomes intense and you’ll hear that.
“I'll tear me open, make you gone, no more can you hurt anyone” shows how this song can be indignant. It reveals this because of this it feels like the singers yelling at the audience to make them go away, or whomever he’s talking to. And in anger he wishes to protect the innocence around him (possibly) by how he states “no more can you hurt anyone”. And with this, in the song it never seems happy to begin with or happy at all. It just seems as though the singer is venting out his anger in one of the most awesome way.

Gloomy, such a weird word, and sad, just like this song. “It grips you, so hold me
it stains you, so hold me. It hates you, so hold me. It holds you, so hold me until it sleeps.” This explains more on a deeper note that maybe he needs more help to get through this mess. Like how when the band got into a car accident and lost a guitarist. Losing a friend could lead to depression, which is one of the topics this song is addressing. Because you don’t ask for people to hold you unless something’s really wrong with you. Or a demon is growing inside you. Like depression, and maybe that’s what the song is about. The inner depression of the singer or maybe the loss of a good friend. Seeing as though they lost multiple guitarist. Either way, this gloomy effect on the song really works for it especially for this type of song. Which (Like I’ve said) is about the inner depression or sadness the singers feeling at this time.

And so this is one of the great songs of Metallica. It is everything it should be and more. Everyone should be listening to Metallica. Especially if you’re feeling down because these guys know how to reach out and get to their audiences. Or if you just feel like breaking something and smashing things into a million pieces. So go listen to it.

Both awesome bands! In the song "King nothing" by Metallica, it uses funny irony to show how there's no one to blame but yourself, "you point your finger bu there's no one around." and in the song "Sweating bullets" by Megadeth it has creepy imagery "feeling claustrophobic like the walls are closing in, blood stains on my hands and I don't know where I've been." which shows how the singer doesn't know what he's been doing and how he's going insane. And so both are the narrative telling of ones lost, whether it be something of value or ones mind. But both are awesome songs, so go listen to them!

We came as Romans album: "Understanding what we've grown to be" is the story of how one must over comes his fear, depression and losing friends. One of the songs talks about how he can’t help out a friend in "I can’t make good decisions for you" he talks about how he can’t help unless the person will let him. And how he wants the friend to show the singer that he thought wrong when he says you won’t live a happy life to his friend. Or in the song "Understanding what we've grown to be" He talks about how he's getting over his depression and his struggle over his fears. And how he thinks others should do the same. Although at the beginning of the song, He says "I die every time I try to lie to myself about feeling alive." which makes it another story. But leads up to him saying "Tonight when I look into the sky, I know this is why I am alive”. Which makes it a great song when you're sad.

Although this album is great, some of the songs talk about the same thing, which can get annoying. Because it’s great to get over your fears and move on and help out friends, but when the same stories told over and over again, it doesn’t really change. So it feels as though it’s the same song. And some of the songs are boring, like "Everything as planned" or "What I wish I never had". They can be good when you listen to them once and awhile, but not great. Which is why I would give it an 8/10 because it does have a great story and fun to listen to and has awesome music. So go listen to it.
